Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Wire rack
  • Doughnut pan

Ingredients

Doughnuts:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon instant espresso powder
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter or oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Glaze:

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup milk or half and half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 8 chocolate sandwich cookies crushed
  • 36 gummy worms

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 12 cavity doughnut pan and set aside.
  • For the doughnuts, in a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and instant espresso.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, butter and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix until just combined. Divide the batter into the prepared doughnut pan.
  • Bake until the doughnuts have puffed up and a toothpick, inserted in the middle, comes out clean, about 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before inverting onto wire racks to cool completely.
  • For the glaze, in a bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, cocoa, milk, vanilla and salt until smooth and somewhat pourable. If its too thick, add a splash more milk. If its too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar.
  • Dip each cooled doughnut into the glaze and top with crushed chocolate cookies and three gummy worms each. Allow to set before serving. Enjoy!
