Sumo Citrus Black Pepper Seasoning

This is my second year creating content for Sumo Citrus during what I think is the best season of the year: Sumo Citrus season. If you’re not familiar with Sumo Citrus I’ll tell you it’s hands down the best fruit I’ve ever tasted. It’s a large mandarin with a distinctive top knot that peels super easily and is the perfect balance of sweetness. The season runs from January to April and I honestly can’t get enough of it. If you’re a huge fan like myself, then you’ll probably want to look for ways to extend the season. This Sumo Citrus Black Pepper Seasoning is a great way to use up those peels that you’d normally throw away.

This homemade sumo citrus black pepper seasoning blend will keep so well in your pantry and goes nicely on so many different things. It’s delicious on steak, chicken, fish or even vegetables. This blend is slightly sweet, salt, a bit spicy because of the black pepper, and gets rounded out nicely thanks to the garlic and onion. It’s a versatile spice blend that you’ll want to add to everything.

Ingredients

  • 4 Sumo Citrus rinsed and dried
  • 1/4 cup black peppercorns
  • 1/4 cup flaky salt
  • 2 tablespoons dried minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons dried minced onion

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 175°F. Place a wire rack over a baking sheet and set aside.
  • Peel the Sumo Citrus in large sections and then using a sharp paring knife, cut off as much of the pith as possible. Lay the peels, skin side up, in a single layer onto the prepared baking sheet.
  • Place in the oven and allow to fully dry out, about 1 hour to 1 1⁄2 hours. Remove from the oven and cool completely. Place into a spice grinder and pulse until it forms a coarse mixture.
  • Transfer to a bowl. Then place the black pepper, salt, garlic and onion into the grinder and plus as well. Pour into the bowl with the Sumo mixture and then toss everything together.
  • Transfer to an airtight container or spice jar and store at room temperature. Use it on anything from steaks to chicken to fish or vegetables. Enjoy!
